While rambling in Kyoto, there's a playful building that catches one's eye: Kazumasa Yamashita's Face House. Located in a quiet residential district of Kyoto, this house with facial features indeed makes a lasting impression on our minds.

The Face House debuted on the streets of Kyoto in 1974, introducing unconventional forms that injected color into an otherwise ordinary downtown street. While it may not strictly be classified as postmodern architecture, given its unconventional forms and its embrace of vibrant color palettes and playfulness typically associated with the style, we cannot deny that the Face House embodies many characteristics of postmodern architecture and enriches the landscape of Kyoto.

The Face House is entertaining not only from the exterior but also on the interior. In 2016, a store named "Creative Studio & Shop OOO" opened within Face House. When you visit, don't forget to explore the store. The ground floor consists of two self-contained studios with direct access from the street through the "mouth". The store sells design items such as postcards, t-shirts, ceramics, etc. The common ground between the interior and exterior is that both are delightful and colorful.
