Daikaku-ji Temple is one of the oldest temples in Kyoto, located in the northern part of the city's scenic Sagano district. It beautifully combines history, culture, and natural beauty. Originally built in the early 800s as a detached palace for Emperor Saga, the emperor enjoyed spending time in this tranquil area on the outskirts of Kyoto. Thirty years after his death, the palace was converted into a temple, and it has since become one of the highest-ranked temples of Shingon Buddhism.

At the Former Saga Imperial Palace, Daikaku-ji Temple boasts a history of 1,200 years. By walking around the temple grounds, you can stroll through Daikaku-ji Temple's corridors and fully experience its beauty. Compared to other temples in Kyoto, Daikaku-ji Temple receives fewer visitors, allowing you to enjoy the silence and appreciate the architecture more peacefully.

Because Daikaku-ji Temple was originally an imperial villa, it does not have the typical temple architecture. Over time, many of the original buildings were lost, but their aesthetic was preserved by replacing them with similar structures brought from other locations. Long, covered walkways open on all sides connect the buildings, and luxurious gold foil paintings adorn the screens and walls.

One interesting feature of Daikaku-ji Temple is its Uguisu-bari, or nightingale floor, which is applied to all the corridors and verandas. These floors are designed to chirp like a nightingale when walked upon, serving as an early warning system against intruders. Additionally, the Murasame-no-roka corridor, which links the buildings, has low ceilings to prevent anyone from swinging swords or spears.

Throughout Daikaku-ji Temple, finely detailed carvings of flowers and nature adorn the wooden walls, columns, and ceilings, showcasing the temple's exquisite craftsmanship and imperial elegance. Depending on when you visit, the temple hosts seasonal events that offer deeper insights into its cultural significance. A visit to Daikaku-ji Temple promises a memorable experience steeped in centuries of tradition and craftsmanship.
